Adopt a School is a program of The Earth Assistance Foundation working in Africa for the development of community schools. The Earth Assistance Foundation was established as a private foundation in Australia in 1978 with a focus on environment rehabilitation, National Park Development, and the provision of water, education and agriculture assistance to Nepal, India and countries of South East Asia. Work in Africa began in 2002 when the Foundation became aware of the serious need for improved education in Tanzania. The need for assistance with village schools was obvious. They were in an a sad condition both in terms of facilities and academic standards. The schools needed support both in terms of funds and capacity building. Villages were in a state of stagnation suffering from recurring drought, famine, chronic unemployment and a general state of hopelessness.. In February 2003 the program ‘adopted’ the first school and began formulating the structures and systems that exist today. The Earth Assistance Foundation (Tz) Ltd. was established as a Tanzanian Company limited by guarantee (non profit) with a Tanzanian board of directors and an expatriate trustee in 2007 At June 2010 twelve schools have been adopted with major holistic developments and a further 15 schools assisted with provision of materials and capacity building. In 2008 the program recognised the need for improved village health services and initiated the Adopt a Clinic Program for the development of Village Health Centres. |
