With over 50 percent of Tanzania’s population living in extreme poverty, many families’ survival is dependent on sending their children to work. It is not a reflection of a lack of emphasis on education – it is simply a matter of whether the family will eat tonight or not. It is estimated that 1.6 million of Tanzania’s 11.9 million 5-17 year olds are engaged in economic activities; it is both a cause and effect of poverty. Orphans are among the most vulnerable children, often at risk of hazardous and abusive forms of work.
AaS has established a child sponsorship program to ensure orphans and seriously impoverished children have a chance at education and are not forced into employment. With the help of generous people such as you, Adopt a School will ensure disadvantaged and deserving children will have the opportunity for an education by covering all the costs associated with school, and supplementing the child’s home expenses. Your sponsorship will include enrolment in school, books and pens, uniforms, lunch contributions, medical cover, transport, and a small monthly food and monetary supplement for the child’s carers.
As a sponsor, you will receive the full background of the child you are supporting, and also receive monthly updates, letters, photos and progress reports. Of course, you are also invited to come to Tanzania and visit any time you like.
