The Schools

Adopt a School works only with Community Schools that are built and supported by village communities. These schools make up the bulk of schools in Tanzania and the academic procedures are administered by the central government. By assisting these schools to develop both their physical and academic facilities and establishing them as model schools our work contributes to the development of education throughout Tanzania.

Adopt a School has researched and is developing over 80 schools in North West Tanzania and is currently working with twelve which are:

Murongoine Primary School

The Murongoine Primary School was chosen for adoption because of its poverty and social difficulties. The work at this school is directed towards elevating the living conditions of the local community.

Mwandet Secondary and Imbibia Primary Schools

These Schools serve a remote Maasai region. The proportionally large number of girl students reflects the progressive attitude of the local Maasai and the determination of the school to educate Maasai girls who in other areas are ignored.

Nshupu Primary and Secondary Schools

These Schools have been selected as they are adjacent to each other and are centred in a densely populated and fast growing region with many problems among which is fierce competition for water. The schools serve as a model for other schools in the region.

Hai Secondary School

Situated close to Mt Kilimanjaro the structures for this school were commenced by the local community supported by a political party that lost its seat in recent elections. The school was intended to be a high quality modern school but now this dream is unlikely to be realised with local support alone. While the school has a single spectacular building by Tanzanian standards, most classrooms do not have desks and there are no laboratories or other teaching materials.

Kai Secondary School

There are still less than half the classrooms needed to serve the local community.

Adopt a School fully supports the original intentions for this school and is working to see them realised.

The development of this school is an ambitious project for Adopt a School and will require substantial funding but the success of the project will have a far reaching effect on Tanzanian Secondary Education.

Usa River Primary School

This school was selected by an American resident Mr. Bill Cowger who has raised funds for its development from various clubs and individuals. The school once presented a very uncared for and neglected appearance. The work in this school is aimed to make the school habitable and functional. The development of a pride in their school by both the students and teachers is an important part of the work.

King’ori Secondary School

This school serves mixed tribal groups and a number of refugees from Somalia and other countries. It is very capably administered by a community and teaching staff who are putting great effort into the development of the school. An important part of this project is the construction of dormitories for girls and AIDS orphans. These dormitories are administered by the school and provide a means for the community to care for its orphans and educate girls who are at risk.

Mbaaseni Primary School

This School has been built with great effort by a village community in the North West foothills of Mt Meru. The region is very poor and after ten years of work the school was able to be opened with one incomplete classroom in March 2007.

Mbaaseni Primary School

The community takes great pride in its school but much work needs to be done to accommodate the students who are waiting to attend school.

Shishoni Secondary and Shishon Primary School

These adjacent schools have been selected because of the dedicated community, staff and students who are working under difficult circumstances to make the most of their very limited circumstances. The Shishon Primary School is old and in a very poor state of repair but the school staff are very efficient in the maintenance of the school and the introduction of modern teaching methods.

Shishoni Secondary School

The Shishoni Secondary School is new and very far from complete yet despite this presents a well cared for appearance. Both students and staff are hard working and above normal pass rates are achieved.

The available facilities are able to accommodate only a fraction of the children of the area who have succeeded in primary school and are waiting to receive secondary education.

Mikuuni Primary School

This school is 45 kilometres from Arusha and four kilometres from an accessible road. Four hundred and forty children are accommodated in 9 incomplete classrooms. This school is in serious need of water. At present water is carried by donkey to the school from a tap 12 kilometres away. The region is very hot and dry yet children have an allowance of less than half a litre of water per day for drinking and ablution purposes. The first component of Adopt a School work at this school is the collection of rain water from roofs into a 50,000 litre tank that will be constructed using local materials and an appropriate system designed by Adopt a School.

All of these schools still need support and benefactors are actively sought.
